"Infrastructure is the backbone of societies in every country and region. Its construction, maintenance and upgrading are vital for functioning of a modern society", says Pedrag L. Popovic, president of IABSE.

The availability, reliability and capacity of structures as part of infrastructure are and will always be a crucial factor for the economical growth and development of regions and cities. Thus Asset management of infrastructures is of vital importance and needs insight into the condition of their structures through proper assessment.

Therefore co-operation of all disciplines, researchers, designers, owners, contractors, etc. is necessary to share, develop and explore knowledge and new solutions.

The event will be focused on the importance that the infrastructures have in our day to day life and the key topics of the event will be:

- Load and carrying capacity and remaining lifetime for bridges, tunnels, port and maritime structures
- Assessment of structural conditions
- Modernization and refurbishment (change of utilization, transformation, conservation, structure of historic and architectural value, etc)
- Materials and products (conservation and repair products, intelligent materials, recycling of materials, etc)
- Structural verifications

5th Annual Bridges Middle East
Doha hosted the 5th Annual Bridges Middle East on November 11-13, 2012.
27/12/2012
The event was co-located with Tunnels Middle East. It is one of the most important in the bridge & tunnel sectors in the Middle East and provides a platform for those involved in planning, design, procurement, construction and maintenance for discussing and exchanging the latest & the best techniques with a view of enhancing durability of these structures.

Qatar has addressed around US $20 billion in the development of bridges, tunnels and interchanges in order to interlink the railways and roadways as well as to connect them to the rest of GCC. Throughout the GCC - Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain - a number of Causeway projects have been planned, plus numerous interchanges, overpasses and pedestrian crossings on the main highways and within municipalities with an overall value of US $279 billion.

The event was focused on:
- The great operational and logistic challenges in the multi-modal transport integration due to lack of signalling after the bridges completion.
- The lack of asset management and durability considerations for the material selection and testing process.
- The project schedules reduction due to the necessity of meeting the demand. This requires the development of revised installation and construction methods.

Attendees had the opportunity to interact with industry experts, government agencies, architectural, consulting and contracting firms, municipalities, material suppliers, technology providers etc.

New Launching Equipment Available
Launching Equipment L44 for Span-by-span Construction is now available
06/10/2010
A new equipment is now available!
The launching girder LG 330/34 L44, also called T3, has just completed few months ago the erection activities at the Dubai Metro Project.
The equipment was fully dedicated to the viaduct portion in proximity of the Dubai International Airport, in a very congested area.
The launching girder is capable to assemble the prefabricated superstructure with the span by span method and has a not conventional design: it is mainly composed of a single-caisson main structure, a rear "arched" fixed leg rigidly connected to the main structure, two main supports and two legs to be utilized during the self launching. The lifting winch runs anchored to the bottom flange of the main structure; the hanging system is located on top of the main caissons.
The equipment has a lot of peculiarities due to the specific requirements of the job-site: the launcher is very light, can erect single and double track segments, can be adapted to an important variation in the span length (from 34 mt. to 18 mt.), can erect two parallel viaducts shifting from one side to the other and finally is capable to pick up the segments from the already existing viaduct. All these features represent very attractive technical advantages for a new utilization of the launching girder that is now available!
